Anarchy on the Roadway

Recently the Orlando area has witnessed gangs of ATV and motorcycle drivers recklessly occupying our roadways. Unfortunately this gang-like behavior is not exclusive to Orlando. This type of roadway anarchy has been documented in other cities throughout the country.

These careless drivers are not only violating the rules of the road, they are also endangering other drivers as well as themselves. While the safety of all drivers on the road is the utmost concern, we have not yet experienced the fallout when someone becomes injured after encountering one of these uncaring agitators.

It is being reported that some of the perpetrators who have been apprehended by law enforcement are driving vehicles which are not licensed for road use and have been reported as stolen. This portends to the significance of insurance.

It would be safe to say that these “roadway anarchists” do not have insurance. So what does this mean if you get caught up in an accident with one of these villains?

For the damages to your vehicle, you will need to make sure you carry the coverage of collision on your auto policy. You will be responsible for your deductible and your insurance company will pay for the amount of the repairs over your deductible.

If you are injured as a result of an accident with an uninsured driver, you will need Uninsured Motorist coverage on your policy. This will compensate you in the event an at-fault uninsured driver causes your injury.

If they are injured, you know they are going to “lawyer up”. They won’t care if they were at fault or not. The Bodily Injury coverage on your auto policy will defend you.

Auto insurance rates are steadily increasing especially in the central Florida area. These rate increases are primarily due to the increased number of vehicles on the road resulting in more accidents and insurance fraud. If law enforcement is not able to get control of these “biker gangs” quickly, we are certain to see a significant spike in our auto insurance premiums.

Approximately 25% of the drivers on the road are uninsured. The best way to protect yourself is to have a comprehensive auto insurance policy. Perhaps it’s time for an auto policy “check-up”. For more information on auto insurance, click here.
